Slaves to Gravity on Punknews.org

I don't listen to so much rock music nowadays (except maybe Tool), but J my next door neighbour for many years (far left) drums for Slaves to Gravity. This year they won the Kerrang! Best British Newcomer Award 2008, which they celebrated by getting suitably wasted. You can download a free sample EP from their debut album, Scatter the Crow by clicking on this link and following the instructions. Lots of sing along tunes and phat riffage in a kind of Alice in Chains meets Foo Fighters vein. I you get to see them live it's well worth it... they really do fucking rock!

Richie Hawtin party hat fun

Went to The End for a Minus night on Saturday for my mate Joe's birhday. Magda played a very laid back warm up followed by Loco Dice's warm bouncy sound, but Marco Houle's live set was a definate highlight. Ritchie Hawtin then showed everyone up as he took the helm with a really upbeat 4 hour set from 6-10.30.

Amazingly this as the first time I've seen him play... but it was easily one of my top3 techno sets of all time (alongside Derrick May and Jeff Mills). It was made all the more fun with party a set of party hats provided by Jo the Party Hat Princess. Richie was understandably reluctant to put his party hat on during his set but he was nice enough put it on after for us. Unfortunately no pic of that but we did get one of him and Jo (above). Legend!

Sadly The End is due to close on 23 January - a major blow to London clubbing. You can read an interview with The End’s directors, Layo and Zoe Paskin here. Such a shame as it's such a sweet venue - it will be greatly missed.

Click here to download a special Rob Da Bank and Friends feat. Richie Hawtin from earlier this year (track listing and link to download).

For a bit of comedy viewing, check his out. Worth it just for GMF's facial expressions...

Nano Records: Free Compilation

Another seasonal treat - Saffy/UK psytrance label Nano have started releasing an entire compilation of free MP3's on their website! Home to the Commercial Hippies, Protoculture, Hydrophonic, AMD, Headroom and Allaby, Nano are by far one of my favourite psy labels. As the peeps behind the Origin stage at Glade, their clean, chunky, funky sound should be familiar from days of outdoor stomping in the summer. Click here for the download store on their lushly designed website, which also has a treasure trove of older Nano gems to get your paws on! New tracks are:

* Fearsome Engine - Beyond Imagination (from the new project of Tristan and Laughing Buddha)
* Avalon - Out There (the Nano debut of new Nano act AVALON, from the UK)
* Tristan and Regan - PFA (The legendary Tristan and Nano boss-man Regan, collaborating on a deep snarling monster!)

On the purchase front, Headroom and AMD's albums will have your feet stomping in seconds and the Commercial Hippies 'If you can't stand the heat' and 'Origin 3' were two of my favourite releases of '06...

Excitingly they've also recently signed Fearsome Engine (Laughing Buddha and Tristan), Avalon(Brighton, previous releases on Wild Things), Chromatone (US) and Hopi (UK) so should be even chunkier funk coming this way soon!

My mate Lexie and I met the Commercial Hippies (Chesh and Regan) in the chill out village at Boom 2006 after they'd played a stonking set earlier in the day. Lexie tried to convert them to Strongbow and we all got properly trashed...

His upbeat Fabric Live with Caspa was a lot of people's first intro to tha bass heavy sounds that have been pumping out the yoo-kay for the last few years.

Dubstep explained in Brizzol

Another gem from Noiseporn: Mary Ann Hobbsgoes to Bristol to find out wha's in the water. Worth watching for the street interviews alone!

And for those of you who like your Brizzol dubstep, here's a link to Appleblim's latest podcast on Rinse FM, home of dubstep in Larndon tawn! Appleblim's Resident Adviser podcast is one of my favourite dubstep mixes. You can by his Dubstep Allstars Vol.6 which came out recently from Amazon, or even the new Skull Disco compilation with Shackleton.

Xmas prezzie - £3 off MP3's at Amazon!

(My favourite bit of Christmas art this year - Pic by Gillian Wearing)

Seasons gretings all... got a little Xmas teat for you!

Dear Amazon.co.uk Customer,

We'd like to give you an extra Christmas present: £3 to spend on anything in our MP3 Music Downloads store on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Visit us on December 25 or 26, then just add your chosen MP3s to your Shopping Basket (you need to use the Shopping Basket rather than 1-Click) and enter code FREEMP3S at the checkout--£3 will be deducted from the total. Feel free to forward this email to friends and family members--they can get £3 to spend on MP3s too!

Amazon recently launched their online MP3 store in a direct challenge to itunes. Unlike itunes there's no restriction on the number of times you can copy the files and it's just as cheap so that's the last time I download anything with restricted access!

Tomorrow methinks I'll be snapping up the latest phat Muti Music glitch hop offering from ill.gates.... just click this link to listen to samples!

Should make all that time with the relatives a bit more bearable! ;)

Noiseporn and Napt

Check out Noiseporn, a quality and uber prolific dance music blog, for free mixes and hot tunes.

It's where I found the link to the Napt mix below. Napt are real party breaks and were responsible for a lot of the re-mixes on the Freestylers awesome Fabric 29 CD. Just click on the link and do what it tells you:

Muti Music: Subvert - Dirt Mix

Really enjoying a bass heavy mash-up mix by a guy called Subvert on Canada's Muti Music. You can download it by rick clicking here:

Download Subverts promo ‘Dirt Mix’ (95MB MP3 Download)

Muti Music released what has been my favourite downtempo compilation of the year, Clipping Paths. It's full of awesome bass heavy hip-hop and dubstep influenced chilled out glitchy beats. Click this link to buy it from Amazon. You can also buy a Subvert EP if you like what you're hearing...

There's another phat breakbeat mix from Muti Music's label head Dov available on their website.
